The Research Group (RG) Architecture and Urbanism aims, essentially, to foster studies that substantiate the areas of architecture and urban planning in contemporary times, favouring the fields of multidisciplinarity, and inter and transdisciplinarity, through relations between theory and practice, in a deepening of the ontological and epistemological value of architecture. This condition of mediation - between theory and practice - is of great importance today as we search for a way to (our) architectural identity in the contemporary world. We understand that the crossing between disciplines - through multidisciplinarity, and inter and transdisciplinarity - is rooted in the process of building this path.

Despite being structured in three research lines, the RP Architecture and Urbanism, is encouraged the inter-relationship between Research Lines and Projects, strengthening cohesion, according to the nature of the RG. This underlines its essentially inter and transdisciplinary character and the quest for an interaction between practice and theory.

In the context of these three research lines, a contribution is sought from the RG researchers to embody the previously signalled issues, through the use of valid impact indicators, preferably international, but also national, mainly comprising: publications in scientific journals; books; book chapters; documentary films; publications in conference proceedings; presentations in conferences; organisation of events - conferences, exhibitions, workshops and experimental initiatives.

The Research Group has the general goal of contributing to the debate on the condition of architecture in the 21st century, not overlooking the past, yet pointing towards the future.

1. Inter and Transdisciplinarity in the Thinking and Practice of Architecture

Responsible: Maria João dos Reis Moreira Soares
Overview: The research line Inter and Transdisciplinarity in the Thought and Practice of Architecture aims to respond to the demands of contemporary society, emphasized by the emerging globalization, establishing itself as a hybrid debate platform - in which the crossing of objectives and results between Research Projects is stimulated -, underlining its essentially inter and transdisciplinary character and the search for an interaction between thought (as the genesis of knowledge) and practice, where architecture has a central value in a vast inter and transdisciplinary network. In this network, and especially due to the aforementioned globalisation, it is necessary to (re)find identity values and to highlight the immanently humanistic character of architecture.
The goals of the research line are to study theoretical and/or practical points of view, exploring, on the one hand, existing theoretical and/or practical cases in the architectural panorama, interwoven in an inter and transdisciplinary network, and, on the other hand, proposing new perspectives and concrete creative situations, which highlight the identity and humanistic value of the contemporary architectural fact, also interwoven in an inter and transdisciplinary network.

2. The City and the Landscape in Contemporaneity

Responsible: Maria de Fátima Silva
Overview: The research line City and Landscape in the Contemporaneity aims to identify the various types of imagetic values - while identitary - associated with the city, the territory and the landscape, as a means for development and for their sustainability in the current emerging society. The valorisation of a territory implies a complete knowledge of its built fabric, geomorphology, natural structure, as well as its identity culture, history, society, biodiversity, etc. In essence, landscape architecture results from the work of planning and building on a natural supporting structure. This research line is based on an experimental methodology capable of promoting a gradual, evolutionary approach to places, with the purpose of equating the elements that are in the genesis of its identity.

3. Architecture and Philosophy

Responsible: Henrique Jorge Gonçalves Fabião e Sérgio Filipe Pinto Amorim
Overview: Being architecture the object of study, recognized in the expression of ideal forms - immateriality - and built forms - materiality -, architecture is the locus (place) of the becoming of the organization of space and philosophy is the logos (reason) for the understanding and for the production of knowledge about this becoming, from two dimensions: ontological and epistemological.
It seeks through questioning, critical thinking and rational argumentation, to organize and structure the specific knowledge produced in the making of architecture, in order to know how and why to transform reality (architecture project).

4. Architecture of Music

Responsible: Jorge Miguel Cecília Moniz
Overview: The research line “Architecture of Music” aims to promote cross-disciplinarity between these two study areas, fostering close collaboration among different approaches and perspectives. The focus of this research line is primarily to encourage collaborative ways of thinking, reflecting, exploring and reinforcing the development of studies in a context of artistic intersection and experimentation. It involves the encounter and fusion of elements that generate forms of thought and, consequently, knowledge, contributing to transculturation through the adoption and convergence of different practices and discourses on materially distinct forms of expression.
